About
In 2016, Facebook put a lot of weight behind shipping Facebook Live & a suite of other features related to it.
I joined the effort and led the design for a feature called "Live With" — it allowed a broadcaster to invite anyone from the audience to join the broadcast in a PiP window — and the goal was to create more opportunities for people to join existing creators on the platform, potentially exposing a larger set of friend connections with each broadcast.
The hypothesis was sound. Privacy & consent was designed at the core of this project, and we created these features in a way that protected the integrity of the broadcaster's stream while giving audience members the ability to opt-in or out as needed.
At the time, interactions like this were unique to Facebook (and the direct rival Twitch) but it wasn't until Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces launched that most people really saw the value in having these considerations at scale.
Facebook Live With
As a broadcaster, you could choose anyone from the audience (but we only let you choose people who are on specific versions of the mobile app in order to guarantee that there was access to a front-facing camera)
