Power over spice is power over everything.
In Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" we catch a glimpse of mentats manually tracking spice mining operations on Arrakis. The absence of computers and advanced artificial intelligence in this story is a direct consequence of a historical event known as the Butlerian Jihad (10,000+ years in the past).
An anti-computer society is hard to comprehend, but seeing all sorts of futuristic machines powered by humans was captivating to see on a big screen.
My first viewing had my eye-lids peeled back in disbelief at the sheer scale, intensity, and beauty of the carefully storyboarded cinematography. I didn't notice enough of the UI, but I really enjoyed the first impression. I loved how descriptive, detailed, and volumetric it presented.
So… I watched the movie again.
Using only Spline and Framer, I built this masthead interaction for the latest iteration of my portfolio over the course of 3 days. I recreated Arrakis in 3D, using a particle emitter to simulate spice, and presenting 2 moons in an orbital path that tends to intersect (causing an eclipse that is shown prominently in Act 1).
In my portfolio, my work represents some of the most valuable elements from my 20+ year career. Drawing the parallels between "spice" and these projects, I thought it would be a fun interaction to invite you, the viewer, to "navigate" my world.
One last thing…
If you want to see how I created the 3D interactions in Spline, here's a link to the community page where I freely share the whole thing.
When Instagram released a Twitter competitor named Threads, our website received 100x more traffic than ever before. How could it be that the social media giant decided to ship a new feed to the entire world while a completely separate software company (the one I worked for) owned and operated the Threads.com domain?
Millions of people looking for Threads.net ended up on our website, so I decided that we needed to create an extra obvious masthead with simple language that clarifies what we do, who it's for, and how it works.
